Is Iran using Lord of the Rings to quell protests?~

As security forces and protesters continue to clash in Iran, the government has begun using propaganda and entertainment in an attempt to quiet the populace, TIME magazine has reported—and it turns out that a Lord of the Rings marathon on Tehran 's Channel Two is part of that plan~

The newsweekly was contacted by a resident of the capital, who asked for anonymity. He or she reported that "Iranian television usually treats its viewers to one or two Hollywood or European movie nights a week. But these are not normal times, so it's been two or three such movies a day. It's part of the push to keep people at home and off the streets, to keep us busy, to get us out of the regime's hair. ... Channel Two is putting on a Lord of the Rings marathon as part of the government's efforts to restore peace."~

The writer shared that many viewers are finding a political subtext to Peter Jackson's trilogy:

"I wonder which official picked this film, starting to suspect, even hope, that there is a subversive soul manning the controls at seda va sima, central broadcasting," wrote the anonymous Iranian. "It is way too easy to find political meaning in the film, to draw comparisons to what is happening in real life. There are themes that seem to allude to Mir-Hossein Mousavi, the candidate President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad claims to have defeated: the unwanted quest and the risking of life in pursuit of an unanticipated destiny. Could he be Boromir, the imperfect warrior who is heroic at the end, dying to defend humanity? Didn't Mousavi talk about being ready for martyrdom?"~

Why there's still hope for a sequel to The Goonies, and what it might be~

Every few years, someone gets our hopes up for a sequel to the beloved 1985 fantasy adventure film The Goonies. The movie became a cult hit, continuing to play in revival houses to this day, but a sequel always seemed like its own kind of fantasy, even when the cast reunited for the DVD release and started talking about plans~

That fizzled when reality set in about scheduling the likes of Josh Brolin and Sean Astin, not to mention cast members who have long since retired from acting~

But Chris Columbus, who wrote the script to the original Goonies, now says that he has received word that director Richard Donner might actually be re-assembling the cast. Columbus is currently directing Goonies cast member Joe Pantoliano (he played Francis Fratelli) in Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief~

"[Pantoliano] said that Richard Donner talked to him about six months ago about the sequel," Columbus said. "I think the only way it could be done is if the kids are now the parents, and their kids have become the Goonies. I still think the two brothers are still alive and well, so they could still be in the movie. So it's a matter of whether or not they could re-create that concept."~

The Goonies centered on a group of kids who lived in the the Goon Docks together. They would play outside and go on adventures. The film chronicled their quest for the pirate treasure of One-Eyed Willie in the caves under their town. Perhaps the biggest hurdle for a Goonies 2 would be believing that modern kids would play outside~

"I don't know if that's possible anymore," Columbus said. "Maybe if all the parents in the new Goonie movie forbid their kids to play on the Internet, that's gotta be the plot. You can't go anywhere near a computer or cell phone. I guess the adventures are online."~

Columbus added that he believes there's a new, younger fan base for the original movie that could bolster a sequel. "Most of the 20-year-olds or 23-year-olds I work with—particularly on Percy Jackson— they do have this love of the '80s, this obsession with the '80s, and they're really convinced that the '80s are this magical time," he said. "I guess part of it is what you're saying, that you could hang out and go on an adventure."~

In the meantime, fans can re-watch the original Goonies and see the cast reunite for the upcoming 25th anniversary. For their part, Pantoliano and Columbus plan to celebrate it. "The first thing he said to me [was], 'You gonna go to the Goonies reunion?'" Columbus said. "I said, 'I didn't know there was one.' It's a year and a half from now, and they're getting everyone together, because I think it's the 25th anniversary of the film. I said, 'Yeah, I'd love to see everybody.'"~

Swedish Women Win Right To Tan Topless~

God bless the feminists! Fighting what they deem as a sex discrimination of sorts, women of all shapes and sizes in Malmö bared criticisms to win the right to bathe topless in the city’s public swimming pool. According to Forsberg, some on the council had lobbied for wording which would have required women to keep their nipples covered, but Forsberg explained that attempting to enforce such a rule would have been too complicated."We don’t define what bathing suits men should wear so it doesn’t make much sense to do it for women. And besides, it’s not unusual for men to have large breasts that resemble women’s breasts," he said~

35,000-Year Old Flute Doesn't Summon Bird~

That was a Zelda reference. No need to thank me folks, just doing my job. It was made from the bone of a giant vulture during the Upper Paleolithic. Found in Ach Valley, in the south of Germany, the 8.7-inch long, one-inch diameter instrument has five holes, with two V-shaped notches carved on one side of it. This was the part in which the musician put the lips to blow, according to University of Tubingen's professor Nicholas Conard, the lead author of the discovery. The other end is broken just on the fifth hole~

Largest recycled artwork – 200,000 aluminum cans and 50 meters long~

Ten main workers and about 100 volunteers led by Robert Bradford; used 200,000 crushed aluminum cans to make this 50 meter long artwork, on the Sussex coast~

The idea is to encourage recycling and think about the value of aluminum cans specifically, because this precious metal can live forever through recycling. This artwork, which took about a week’s time, will now be recycled to keep a television running for seventy years~

Armor transforms your DS into Bumblebee or Megatron~

Revenge of the Fallen, the second movie in the massive Transformers franchise, is out this week, and to celebrate PDP has created these spankadelic fancy dress costumes for your Nintendo DS. The stylus and armor is available in both Bumblebee and Megatron styles, and the cost is $19.99 for both, or $12.99 for either the stylus or the case. I think I'll stick with Bumblebee, as the Megatron stylus looks like something you wouldn't want to find in a doctor's surgery~

Li Huiyan, of Chongqing, hired 30 villagers for six months to dig the hole in his kitchen, reports IC Media. He wanted to reach an underground river which he suspected was full of fish~

The river had been over ground but had disappeared 30 years ago when the local authorities bombed part of a mountain to pave a road.Li explained: “The river used to have so many fish, and by simply putting a net there, hundreds of fish would be caught.”After digging his pit down to the river, Li installed a fishing net across it and regularly hauls out fish, so far earning his family nearly £2,000.“I sell the fish at a wholesale price of 24 yuan (£2.15p) per kilo, but 36 yuan (£3.20p) per kilo for retail,” he said.Li built ladders from his kitchen to the river 16 metres below, and each day he has to go down to check the harvest~

Orange updates its solar tent just in time for the festival season~

his camping concept from UK mobile company Orange looks awesome. Especially if, like me, you like your gadgets and couldn't bear being away from them for a whole weekend. The Orange tent also boasts something called "glo-cation technology". Nice. It's got a keyboard that's been torn down to size for control and a gyration mouse to handle head tracking. World's largest solar array planned for the Sahara Desert~

The Sahara Desert gets a lot of sun. In fact, it gets so much that if a mere 0.3% of its area was used for a solar plant, it could power all of Europe. So it only makes sense that 20 German companies are looking into doing just that~

The plan would be to scatter solar collectors all across northern Africa in politically stable countries rather than putting them all in one spot. It'll take years to build everything as well as $555 billion in funds, but in the long run it'll be well worth it~
